Mafalala blues by Camila de Sousa

16 July-12 Aug 2010. Photographs and an installation by Mozambican artist Camila de Sousa shed light on the mythical neighbourhood of Mafalala, one of the oldest informal settlements in Maputo. Built on the edge of what used to be the white neighbourhood under Portuguese colonial rule, Mafalala was once home to the former Mozambican presidents Samora Machel and Joaquim Chissano, the poet Jose Craveirinho and the footballer Eusebio. It is characterised by brightly coloured houses made from sheets of zinc and wooden frames as brick buildings were largely forbidden. Mon 12.00-19.00, Tues-Fri 10.00-19.00. more
Tunduro international festival of the arts

27-29 Aug 2010. This new international multi-disciplinary arts festival in Maputo features live music, art, street performances, food and arts and crafts. The programme includes performances by Aly Keyta from Mali, Algerian singer and lute player Fethi Tabet and his band Musiciens Sans Frontières and an exhibition of photographs entitled Bamako by Seydou Camara and Aboubakar Traoré. Organised in partnership with the French-Mozambican cultural centre in Maputo. more

Sofoto photography presentation in Maputo

30 June 2010. This is the sixth appointment in a series of monthly presentations launched by the French-Mozambican Cultural Centre (CCFM) in November 2009 as a platform for photographers to show their work. Sófoto is open to amateur and professional photographers but priority is given to those who are self-taught or in training. Photographs are projected in the garden of the CCFM. Prospective participants must submit their work for evaluation before a presentation is arranged. 19.00. Entry free. more

17-30 June 2010. Exhibition of paintings by Mozambican artist José Norberto under the title Ineditum Inventabilis. Norberto began painting in Quelimane in 1985 and has shown his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions inside and outside the country. In December 2008 he presented paintings at a show in the parliament building in Maputo. more

10 June-15 July 2010. Revisitar Ricardo Rangel pays tribute to the late photographer Ricardo Rangel, one of the most important figures on the social, cultural and political scene in Mozambique in the last half century. The exhibition presents 22 of his best-known and most representative images. Born in Lourenço Marques (present-day Maputo) in 1924, Rangel is widely considered the most important photographer in Mozambique. Of mixed African, Asian and European descent, he became the first non-white photographer to get a job with for the Notícias da tarde newspaper in 1952 before going on to work for all the main newspapers in the country. In 1983 he established the prestigious Centro de Formaçao Fotográfica in Maputo, of which he remained the director until his death in 2009 at the age of 85. more
Matias Ntundo exhibition at Fortaleza

9-29 June 2010. Exhibition of woodcut prints by the Makonde artist Matias Ntundo, who hails from Mueda in northeastern Mozambique. Born in 1948, Ntundo began his career as a sculptor before turning his attention to woodcuts. In his work he reflects on the country’s ancestral history as well as depicting scenes from the Bible in the Makonde language. more

18 May-3 June 2010. Anjos Urbanos is the title of a solo show by Mozambican photographer José Cabral. Born in then Lourenco Marques in 1952, Cabral learned the basics of photography from his father, a railway technician and an amateur photographer and cinematographer. He attended an agricultural school in Gaza province before being conscripted in 1969 to fight against the Frelimo liberation movement. Following independence from Portugal in 1974 he devoted himself to photography, working for various institutions and media publications. more

11 May-4 June 2010. The history of Maputo is the subject of a photographic exhibition by the Maputo-based painter and photographer Cita Vissers. She is the author of the photographic book Entre Mar e Marginal: as praias de Maputo about the beaches of the Mozambican capital. more
