2nd Mozambique Coal Conference in Maputo

5-6 July 2011. This is the second Mozambique Coal Conference for senior executives from global coal producers, their suppliers and clients, international engineering firms, investors and Mozambican government officials. On this occasion delegates will come from Australia, South Africa, India, Bostwana, Canada, United Kingdom, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates USA, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and of course Mozambique to discuss the geopolitical situation of coal worldwide and its future in Mozambique. More than 250 people are expected for this event. The first coal conference took place in July 2010. Major global mining companies such as Vale and the Rio Tinto are planning to develop extensive export projects and open new coal mines to turn Mozambique a major coal producers. Since May 2011 the Brazilian company Vale began coal production in Moatize, Mozambique. more
Projection and Discussion on Women and Migration

7 June 2011. CaféKultur dedicates this appointment to migration and focuses on the challenges for women in an intercultural context. There is also a projection of the movie Emine aus Incesu directed by Barbara Trottnow. This film tells the story of the difficulties of a Turkish girl, Emine, when she immigrates to Germany at the age of 18 as a guest worker. The movie is followed by a public discussion with the director. Projection stats at 18.00. more
Concert by Aly Faque and his Band

3 June 2011. This concert features the singer Aly Faque, master of acoustic guitar and the traditional rhythms coming from Nampula. Faque’s music is inspired since 1991 by Salif Keita. In 1995 Faque, who started singing in 1988, won the first price at the show Programa Sabadão conducted by Victor José. Since then he published six cds and performed all around Europe. Faque is specialized in guitar, pankwé, keyboard and percussions. His band, composed by Dambujo, Jaime Matlombe and Tony Sifá was founded two years ago and lays the rhythms of each Mozambican region. Throughout 2011 every third Friday of each month Goethe Institute organises a poetry night, held in Portuguese. This event is organized by ICMA (German-Mozambican Cultural Institute) in collaboration with UNE (National Writers’ Union). The programme includes poetry lectures by poets, encounters with writers as well as musical performances. more

6-11 December 2010. The sixth edition of the Maputo Fashion Week foresees a rich programme of walkways as well as collateral events and exhibitions with the participation of 40 national young and established stylists as well as international designers coming from Brazil, Venezuela, Germany and Italy. Among the international stylists who will present their new collections are Kilian Kerner, Angela Carsani, Luiz DeLaja, Simone Mazulli and Soraya Teràn. This event is a great vehicle for the development of the Mozambican fashion industry, for the tourism and cultural promotion. more
Projection Series at the German-Mozambican Cultural Institute

15 November-4 December 2010. The German-Mozambican Cultural Institute, in collaboration with the German and the Suisse Embassy in Maputo, launches the projection of a series of short films coming from several African countries, which won the Pan-African film competition for young directors organized by Goethe Institute as well as the projection of a selection of movies coming from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Among the German speaking movies are Ein Freund von Mir (A Friend of Mine) by Sebastian Schipper, Kleine Fische (Small Fishes) by Marco Anoniazzi, Giulias Verschwinden (Julia’s Disappear). more

Cycle of Conferences on Water at CCFM

14 October, 11 November, 14 December 2010. CCFM in collaboration with the French embassy in Maputo proposes a cycle of conferences, debates and film projections on the subject “Water and Man in Africa”. Various organizations, which deal with climate change, and similar topics estimate that by 2050 over 200 million people will migrate from the southern hemisphere, and especially from Africa, due to a water shortages, which will cause reduced agricultural productivity and food shortages. Many of Africa’s major rivers, such as the Niger, are under threat. A study by Maarten de Wit and Jacek Stankiewicz conducted at the University of Cape Town reveals that north-western and southern Africa, Botswana and South Africa in particular, would be the areas most affected by water scarcity. more
Sculpture and Painting Exhibition at CCFM

27 September-9 October 2010. This exhibition entitled Ordinary Materials for Extraordinary Lives features the sculptures by the Mozambican artist Gonçalo Mabunda, as well as paintings and collages by the Serbian artist Branislava Stojanovic. Mabunda, who grew during the country’s civil war civil war, makes sculptures out of objects with strong political connotations, such as decommissioned guns. Mabunda has displayed his sculptures in the US, England, Sweden, France, Japan and South Africa. Stojanovic has graduated in 2007 at the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome, Department of Stage and Film design and Costume and has displayed her works primarily in Italy. more
